Objectives

The objectives for this week's experiment are:

  1. To compare experimental beam deflections for a simple beam-loading situation with the deflections predicted by theory (superposition tables).

  2. To show that wood acts as a linear-elastic material and that its modulus of elasticity is about an order of magnitude lower than that of aluminum or steel.

  3.  To utilize the data from one of the tests to determine the modulus of elasticity for the member.  One should calculate a value of E for two deflections on the member and then compare the results.
