Assignment

Thin-Wall Steel Vessel

  1. We will use the strain rosette which is inclined relative to the principal directions and measure the strains for pressures at 200 psi increments to 1800 or 2000 psi.
  1. Calculate the stresses in the x-y system using the bi-axial Hooke's law and then determine the principal stresses.

Thick-Wall Aluminum Vessel

  1. We will use the first two strain gages (those nearest the center of the vessel), which are lined up with the hoop and radial (principal) directions, and measure the strains for pressures at 100 psi increments to 1000 psi.
  1. Calculate the stresses in the hoop and radial directions using the bi-axial Hooke's law.
  1. Summarize your results, as per your teachers' instructions, and submit at the start of the next lab class.
