Objectives

The objectives for this week's experiment are:

Thin-wall Steel Vessels

  1. To demonstrate the use of thin-walled pressure vessels subjected to a biaxial stress state on the outside diameter of the vessel.
  2. To demonstrate the use of a 0-45-90 degree strain gage rosette oriented at an offset angle with the length of the pressure vessel.
  3. To compare experimental results with those predicted from both thin-wall and thick-wall pressure vessel theory for a thin-walled vessel.
  4. To compare the orientation of the principal stresses from the experiment with the orientations predicted by theory; prove that the principal directions follow lines of symmetry.

Thick-wall Aluminum Vessel

  1. To demonstrate the use of thick-walled pressure vessels subjected to a triaxial stress state inside the wall of the vessel.
  2. To demonstrate the use of a uniaxial strain gages aligned with the principal directions of the pressure vessel.
  3. To compare experimental results with those predicted from both thin-wall and thick-wall pressure vessel theory for a thick-walled vessel.
