Wood Connections

This week we will test a variety of wood connections.  These are related to shear flow but approach it from a different angle than IDE 110.  The tests are:

  1. Tension of plate-connector joints.  We compare different mending plates on pine splices.
  2. Dowel bearing.  We compare how holes in pine resist a 3/4" bolt pushed in axial and transverse directions.
  3. Fastener withdrawal.  You will choose a fastener, drive it in pine, and then see how much force it takes to withdraw it.
  4. Janka hardness.  This isn't a connection test but gives you experience with other types of wood.  We will compare the hardness of cedar, poplar, fir, pine, oak and composite decking.
