Assignment

  1. Each group will test A36 steel.  The Instron testing system will provide several material properties and a stress-strain curve.  A quick visual inspection of the graph should provide a means of double-checking many of the results generated by the software.

  1. Select and test a second material.

  2. Summarize your results, as per your teachers' instructions, and submit at the start of the next lab class.  Each group may also be asked to sketch his/her stress-strain curves on the whiteboard.

    • List the mechanical properties for your research group's A36 steel sample.
    • Compare the properties and stress-strain curve for the second object to those of the steel sample.
      • Was it stronger?  Weaker?
      • Did it stretch more? Less?
      • Which fracture was louder?
      • Did the fracture surfaces look alike?
    • Find at least three things that were either not performed or performed incorrectly according to ASTM E8 during the A36-steel test.

  3. Sample results
